Repair and Upgrades to System

rwl1.jpg

RUNWAY LIGHTING:
I am pleased to announce that the runway lighting system has been "repaired" and modified to give ease of locating the airport, proper pattern allignment and night approaches an added margin of safety at Brighton Airport. All the lights have been upgraded to fluorescent fixtures and bulbs that yield an equivalent of 100 watts of light. (7,500 lumens) In addition, fresnel globes are also used to divert the light up and out. At each end of the runway split red/clear lenses that indicate the end of the runway surface and split green/clear lenses that indicate the threshold. There was one light station that was missing form the lighting system for years and was ressurected with the help of a metal detector to locate the feed lines.

All of this was accomplished with the sole support of donations from members of the Brighton Airport Association and none of the general funds were used for this project.
At this time, I would like to extend a warm hearted thank you to the following donators that have come forward up to this point. They are:

Bob Komjathy
Marv Dunlap
Pete Dronchef
Bob Pingston
Mark Friend
Bill Cody
David Sullivan
Dave Keller
Gottfried Schiller
Jerry Killeen

The total cost of the new lighting system was $996.65 of which more than half that amount was for the fresnel lenses $548.76. This covered repairing the existing 20 lights and a reserve of 2 fixtures for damage repair or for the over-run of runway -22. To rebuild from scratch the lighting system for the airport has been priced out at over $5,000.00 It is a dramatic savings to the airport to have been able to upgrade the existing system.Total current draw for the entire lighting system is less than 5 amps.

Bob Komjathy also donated his time to install and repair the electrical circuits, repaint tires, drill drain holes in the bottom side of the tires to prevent water collection. This will help keep the wire connections dry and prevent mosquito formation.

How to use the runway lighting system:

Frequency 122.9 MHZ

To turn it on:

5 (five)clicks within 5 seconds turns on both the runway lights and the rotating beacon on the back of Bob Komjathy's hangar. The two items are operated by two separate receivers. Please do not click your microphone too quickly as the radio circuits interpret this as a distant signal that is fluttering thru the squelch control and will disregard your request.

To turn off the lights:

A new procedure for the runway lights as of 10/15/2007. The rotating beacon AND THE RUNWAY LIGHTS will time out after 15 minutes from the last request to turn it on. 3 CLICKS WILL NO LONGER HAVE ANY EFFECT ON SHUTTING OFF THE SYSTEM.
